Cretin Derham-Hall
Tennis team started off the season with 3 matches against Buffalo, Cretin and Hibbing. We lost all 3 matches 5-2 but there were good things that happened. Gabi Newton playing 1st for the 4th season has developed into an amazing tennis player. You can tell she put time into your game since last season. All 3 coaches said they were impressed how good she has gotten. Catilyn Easton was 3-0 on the day. Avery Anderson was 1-2. She played 2 matches in singles and lost one in tiebreaker. Teyah Miller playing in her first varsity matches did a great job. Teyah had a close match at 4th singles against Hibbing. First year tennis players Talitha Kue (11th) and Bella Flower (8th) did a great job getting some action in their varsity matches. There is no question we will get better with some work in practices and more matches for these athletes we have on our team. This week we have 10 matches. Tuesday Princeton and Duluth Marshal. Wednesday Maple Grove and Apple Valley where Tony Hirte is their new Head Coach. Coach Hirte used to coach at Coon Rapids as our JV coach. Thursday we have Big Lake, Perham and Mora. GO CARDINALS

Tennis team had 2 matches today against Maple Grove and Apple Valley. We lost to Maple Grove 7-0. All players competed hard against the top 5 team in the state. It was a great way to see where we were at. Against Apple Valley we won 5-2. Coach Hirte is in first year as a Head Coach. Big Lake
Tennis team continued their season with 2 matches recently. Last Thursday the team beat Big Lake 6-1 in a 4 team round robin. All 4 singles won in straight sets. 1st doubles came from behind in both sets to win 7-5, 7-5. 3rd singles of Teyah and Kalitha lost a close match at 3rd doubles. We were not able to get our other matches in due to the weather. Yesterday we played against Park Center and won 5-2. They have gotten better under their coach. Gabi and Melanie won in straight sets and for the first time all year all 3 doubles won. Bella Flower, a first year tennis player who is a great softball player won her first match at 3rd doubles with Kalitha. Gabi who has been our 1st singles player for 4 years has developed into a great player. The most impressive part of her game is her mental toughness. She is refocused immediately right when the next point starts. This is what we want in our players. Our overall record is 5-4.

Andover
Tennis team had a busy week as we went back to school. Last Tuesday we played against Andover which we lost 5-2. We didn't play our best after being off for Labor Day. Catilyn Easton won in straight sets at 4th singles as well as Teyah Miller / Talitha Kue at 3rd doubles. Gabi Newton played a great match losing at 1st singles 6-3, 6-3. Avery Anderson at 3rd singles lost in 3 sets. On Wednesday we beat Irondale 5-2. Gabi, Melanie and Catilyn won in straight sets. 1st and 3rd doubles each won in straight sets. It was the first time this season where I saw our 1st doubles closing in on the net to put away their volleys. Thanks to Coach Fellows for all of his help this season.
On Thursday we lost to Blaine 6-1. Caitlyn Easton won a great match in 3 sets. Catilyn is becoming such a smart tennis player in how she is moving the ball around. Gabi had a great match in her losing effort to Blaine #1. On Saturday we competed in the Brainerd tournament where it was flighted by position. There are 8 teams and it is set up as 2 pools of 4. You play each person in your pool once. Based on how you do then it is set for 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th place. Melanie played unbelievable matches. In one match she was in the 2nd set tiebreaker where her opponent made a call that seemed questionable at crucial time in her match but Melanie did not let it bother her. Results are as follows

Delano
Tennis team finished the week off with a 4 team round robin competing against Delano, St. Francis and Totino Grace. Going into the match we were going to be short some players due to other obligations which gave some JV tennis players the opportunity to play a few matches. In the first round we lost to Delano 6-1. Laura S and Olivia K lost at 3rd doubles in straight sets. They played some great points and once they understand the movement there is no question they will get some wins on varsity. Caitlyn won at 3rd singles in straight sets and in fact she won all of her matches on the day. Caitlyn is playing such great matches ever since her Park Center loss. Gabi lost an extremely tight two setter at 1st singles. In the 2nd round we lost to St. Francis 4-3. In this match we moved some of our singles players into doubles to see how they would do and there were some positive results. Caitlyn and Melanie won in a super tiebreaker at 2nd doubles. Macie and Coral won at 3rd doubles. Gabi also won in a super tiebreaker in a great match. In the 3rd round we lost to Totino Grace 4-3. Gabi and Caitlyn won in straight sets. Morgan and Teyah won in a super tiebreaker coming from behind, way to be in the NOW in the match. As Coach Fellows said we have a group of players compete until the final point has been played and not all teams do that. Even though we lost all 3 matches there were so many positive items that occurred on Saturday. Last year we lost to Delano 7-0 this year 6-1; St. Francis lost last year 6-1 this year 4-3; TG last year we lost 5-2 this year 4-3. We are getting better and we could make some head waves in section play later on this season. Results are as follows:

Anoka
Tennis team beat Anoka on Tuesday 4-3 to bring their season record to 8-10. Champlin Park was moved to this coming Monday. It was quite a match with 3 points going sets. Gabi (1st), Catilyn (2nd) and Melaine (3) only gave up 2 games in those 3 spots. Abby and Avery lost in straight sets at 1st doubles. Macie and Coral (2nd doubles) lost in 3 as did Morgan and Talitha (3rd doubles) in 3 sets. Match came down to Teyah, a 9th grader who previously lost 4 times at 4th singles. Teyah lost the 1st set 6-2 and turned the 2nd set around by winning 6-4 in the 2nd set. 3rd set was 6-2 in what I saw her play, the best set of the year. I am hoping Teyah now realizes when things are going good she still has it in her to compete and turn matches around. Amazing job in the Anoka match. Results are as follows
